Cooperation between the Nencki Institute and the NBIA Poland Association

The Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences has established a research collaboration with the NBIA Association Poland, which unites patients affected by a rare genetic disease characterized by excessive brain iron accumulation (NBIA - neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation).

The research in collaboration with NBIA Poland will be conducted in the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology and Metabolism headed by Prof. Mariusz Wieckowski and in the Laboratory of Cell Signalling and Metabolic Disorders headed by Prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyn, and will contribute to a better understanding of the pathomechanisms of this disease most likely related to disorders of lipid metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction. The research conducted at the Nencki Institute will be coordinated by Prof. Mariusz Wieckowski.

Founded in 2018, the NBIA Poland Association is an organization of patients and their families with non-profit status, which in 2019, joined the international NBIA Alliance group as an NBIA patient organization from Poland.
