Nencki Institute Seminar

Dear All

This Thursday, 28th January, at 3pm, Prof. Matthias Bochtler, head of the Laboratory of Structural Biology at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw, will give a lecture entitled: DNA modifications at the crossroads of epigenomics and DNA repair

Abstract

In my presentation, I will show why the repertoire of DNA nucleobases with biological roles is so much broader in RNA than DNA. I will then discuss the biophysical properties of the two enzymatically methylated nucleobases that do occur in eukaryotic DNA, 5mC and 6mA. I will show that in both cases, the biological effects of these modifications are compatible with the biophysics, suggesting that evolution has built on the weak intrinsic properties of these modifications to bring about modern-day outcomes of DNA methylation. Finally, I will talk about histone crosstalk to ensure fidelity of methylation, when epigenetic memories need to be accurately preserved, and active DNA demethylation, when these memories have to be erased. In the latter process, TET dioxygenases cooperate with enzymes of the BER pathway, which have been co-opted from DNA repair for reprogramming.
